Ubuntu 24.10 “Oracular Oriole” Reaches End of Life, Upgrade to Ubuntu 25.04 Now

Ubuntu 24.10 “Oracular Oriole” reached end of life on July 10, 2025. Canonical urges users to upgrade to Ubuntu 25.04 “Plucky Puffin” for continued security and software updates. Learn how to upgrade now.

As of July 10, 2025, Ubuntu 24.10 “Oracular Oriole” has officially reached its end of life (EOL), meaning Canonical will no longer provide software or security updates for this release. Users are strongly encouraged to upgrade to Ubuntu 25.04 “Plucky Puffin” to ensure their systems remain secure and up to date.

Released on October 10, 2024, Ubuntu 24.10 was a non-LTS (Long Term Support) release, supported for only nine months. It featured the Linux 6.11 kernel and GNOME 47 “Denver” desktop environment. Without ongoing updates, systems running Ubuntu 24.10 may become vulnerable to security risks over time.

Ubuntu 25.04, the recommended upgrade, offers enhanced features, including the Linux 6.14 kernel, Mesa 25 graphics stack, and the latest GNOME 48 desktop environment. This release will receive support until February 2026, providing six months of updates.

To upgrade, users can follow Canonical’s step-by-step guide, with the process typically taking around 30 minutes. Before upgrading, back up critical files to avoid data loss. For those preferring long-term stability, Ubuntu 24.04 LTS “Noble Numbat” is an alternative, supported for up to 10 years.

Act now to keep your system secure—upgrade to Ubuntu 25.04 today!
